We were given some really good advice “travel on only the big buses and the more expensive ones are the best”.
Thankfully we took this advice and booked The Giant Ibis bus. It was luxury, plenty of leg room, comfy seats and air conditioning.
The journey took nearly 6 hours from Phnom Phen to Siem Reap. They stopped every two hours, two 20 minute comfort stops and a lunch break where we all piled into the ‘cafe’. The staff were trained to be quick and we were all very efficiently served and back on the bus in about 30 minutes. Both Paul and I had local dishes – Pad Thai and rice with pineapple and nuts. Very nice.
Our hotel was the Okay 1 hotel (the sister company to the one we had stayed in in Phnom Penh). Not quite the bling but very nice. The rooftop swimming pool was a Godsend.
We took a walk out for dinner and found a little on the street cafe. On the tables were cookers and you could choose to have the ingredients delivered to you and you cooked your own meal. You could either cook soup or have food to bbq. Feeling tired we went for a ‘ready meal’ and had a very nice meal along with beer and the cost was less than £5.00 for the two of us.
